Australian Open | January 2018
The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year. Prior to 1988 the tournament had been played on grass. Since 1988 two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used at Melbourne Park – green Rebound Ace to 2007 and blue Plexicushion from 2008. The Australian Open typically has high attendance, second only to the US Open.
French Open | May – June 2018
The French Open, often referred to as Roland, is held over two weeks between late May and early June at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Named after the French aviator Roland Garros, it is the premier clay court tennis championship event in the world. Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam event held on clay and ends the clay court season. Because of the slow-playing surface and the five-set men’s singles matches without a tiebreak in the final set, the event is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.
Wimbledon | July 2018
Wimbledon is the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament in the world, and is widely considered the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass. The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early on July, culminating with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final, scheduled always for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively. Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage.
US Open | August – September 2018
The US Open is a hardcourt tennis tournament which is the modern version of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the U.S. National Championship, for which men’s singles was first contested in 1881. Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final tennis major comprising the Grand Slam each year. The US Open is held annually, starting on the last Monday in August, and lasting for two weeks into September, with the middle weekend coinciding with the Labor Day holiday. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
